Switchfin, a new firmware for ATCOM IP PBX series

Since the beginning of 2010 the guys over at Switchfin have re-invigorated development on Astfin2, the software which powers the ATCOM IP PBX devices. Things are really starting to come along now, they have made upgrades to existing software and implemented some exciting new features, some of which are still in testing and some of which can be seen and used now.

I'm a fan of lists, so here's some of the new things in list form;

As you can see it's a pretty comprehensive list with a few very exciting points. The ones that will obviously stand out for many people are Asterisk 1.6 and G729. As G729 is patent encumbered it's not built by default, but is there in the build system for those who are not restricted by software patents and would like to use it.

With a DHCP server as well as Asterisk 1.6 this may pave the way towards being able to provision phones directly from an ATCOM IP PBX. The support in asterisk-gui is at least partially there, as the Digium AA50 Appliance has been able to provision Polycom phones for a while. This is something that we will be looking into here at nicegear.

If you try out the Switchfin firmware then let us know what you think. If you've got one of our ATCOM IP PBX appliances and want a hand to try it out then let us know.

  3. Hi Guys.

    My name is Jason Kenah and I’m the primary developer for the GUI 4.0 in SwitchFin (I’m also a Kiwi, Napier born and bred but living in AUS now).

    I would like to point out a few things that are not mentioned in this article

    Asterisk 1.6 is only for testing and is far from production ready, Asterisk 1.4.32 is fully supported and running fine.

    We are currently looking into improving provisioning and in the next few days/weeks should have an implementation of the T.38 fax stack backported from Asterisk 1.6.

    If you have any suggestions/bugs/fixes please direct them at our forum (http://switchfin.org).

    Thanks
    Jason Kenah

  4. Hi Jason,

    Yes I probably could have been clearer that Asterisk 1.6 is still in testing.

    Well done for your excellent work on Switchfin and thanks for stopping by to comment.

  8. Hi Robbie,

    I don't know if there's a public download available currently. If you're interested I can probably compile an image for you and make it public for you.

    Just let me know what type of box it's for and any specific options you want and I'll find some time.

  10. Hi Hadley,

    I have an IP04 with FXS & FXO ports. Andrew mentioned that the heard the latest version makes it easier to connect to world exchange.

    Would like to try the DHCP server and FaxToEmail options

    Have had a go a couple of times at compiling it myself but it hasn't worked so far. If you know where there are some helpful hints on how to compile I will have another go myself.

    Thanks

    Robbie
  11. Hi Robbie,

    Here's my notes on doing my first compile;

    http://www.switchfin.org/index.php?option=com_agora&task=topic&id=18&...

    The developers seem very responsive in the forum so if you've got specific problems compiling then you could ask there - they are probably interested in hearing about issues anyway.

    Either way let me know how you get on compiling or if you would like me to upload an image for you.

  12. Hi Hadley,

    Thanks for the link. Managed to compile an image (U12.15) follwing your notes.

    Have loaded it up successfully, still to configure and test.

    Cheers
