This is the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, released March 2016! With an even faster processor (one and a half times the Pi 2, which was 6 times the B+), 1GB RAM, and the same four USB ports and form factor as last year's Pi 2, but now with built in WiFi and Bluetooth. Great for classroom learning, networked devices, media centres and oh so many more fun things.

The Raspberry Pi 3 delivers 1.5 times times the processing capacity of the previous model Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, which equates to ten times the processing power of the original Model B. This third generation Raspberry Pi has an upgraded Broadcom BCM2837 processor, which is a powerful ARMv8 based quad-core processor that runs at 1.2GHz. The board also features built in 2.4GHz 802.11g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1 (both Classic and Low Energy).

What's changed from the older Raspberry Pi 2?

  • Built in Broadcom BCM43143 WiFi
  • Built in Bluetooth 4 Low Energy (BLE)
  • Faster Broadcom BCM2837 processor running at 1.2GHz
  • Further power supply improvements meaning more power can be supplied to USB devices.

Things that are the same as the Rasberry Pi 2

  • The same form factor as the Pi 2 (cases and addon boards will still fit).
  • The same 1GB RAM
  • The same full size HDMI
  • The same 10/100 Ethernet
  • The same CSI camera port and DSI display ports
  • The same micro USB power supply

Note: While the board is the same form factor as the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, the LEDs have changed position slightly.

Who wants pi? The Raspberry Pi has made quite a splash since it was first announced. The credit-card sized computer is capable of many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. It can run several flavours of Linux and is being used to teach kids all over the world how to program... Oh yeah, and it does all that for under $50 (yes, that bit doesn't really apply to New Zealand dollars).
